The Threepenny Opera

The Centro Dramático Galego will perform an updated version of the classic by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill “The Threepenny Opera”, with stage direction by Quico Cadaval and musical direction by Diego García Rodríguez. Luis Tosar leads the cast in this musical drama together with César Goldi, Alba Messa, Monica de Nut, Marta Pazos, Francisco Pérez “Narf”, Marcos Orsi, Muriel Sánchez, Begoña Santalices and Sergio Zearreta.

Sponsored by the City of Culture, by the Department of Culture & Tourism of the Xunta de Galicia and by Novacaixagalicia, the piece, Brecht's most important theatrical success, is based on the English playwright John Gay's “The Beggar's Opera” (1728). Brecht's formulations on stage are joined to a fascinating music score composed by Kurt Weill, incorporating cabaret, jazz and classical music, although satirically. Many of the individual songs achieved great success by themselves, such as “The Ballad of Mack the Knife” or “Pirate Jenny”.

Brecht sets his opera in Germany in the 1930s, amidst a world of crime, crisis, prostitution, destitution and abuse. The plot unfolds in a city where ambition, dreams, torture and beauty rule. The bandit Mackie Messer – Mack the Knife –, played by Luis Tosar, behaves as if nothing were to stop his career of successful crimes, until he decides to marry Polly Peachum, the daughter of the “king of the beggars”.

It is the beginning of the end, yet it leaves us with a phrase to remember: Who is the greatest criminal, he who robs a bank or he who founds one?.
