Guided tours | Tattoo. Art beneath the skin

Get closer to the exhibition Tattoo: Art beneath the skin through a guided tour led by the specialized staff of the Gaiás Museum. This tour delves into the symbolism, techniques, aesthetics, and cultural intersections that have turned tattooing into an art form and a constantly evolving global phenomenon.

From a ritual element practiced by traditional societies to its use as a punitive measure and a marker of marginality, tattooing has been present in all cultures throughout different eras. It has managed to survive and transform into a source of pride and an expression of individuality.

This is a story that follows tattoo artists and tattooed individuals across the five continents, told through 240 historical and contemporary works from 18 countries. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, books, tattooing tools, masks, photographs, stamps, audiovisuals, and over twenty tattooed silicone models, allowing visitors to admire the styles and techniques of some of the best contemporary tattoo artists in a unique and innovative format.

Produced by the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac in Paris in collaboration with the Cidade da Cultura Foundation and the “la Caixa” Foundation, Tattoo: Art Under the Skin is curated by Anne Richard, a prominent cultural agent in European avant-garde art and founder of the influential magazine HEY! Modern Art & Pop Culture.
