Within the celebrations of the Year of Music, the singer Luz Casal will perform at the Plaza de la Quintana, during the festivities surrounding Saint James' day (Fiestas del Apóstol), on July 22nd, in a concert sponsored by the City of Culture. On the following day, July 23rd, she will perform at the Rías Baixas International Music, Dance and Theater in Pontevedra.
The singer Luz Casal was born in Boimorto (A Coruña), and she has always shown an unyielding vocation to devote her life to music.
Ever since her first album “Luz” came out in 1982, audiences and critics have recognized the quality and professionalism in her work. After hits in 1989 with songs such as “Loca”, “Te dejé marchar” or “No me importa nada”, she became the Spanish soloist par excellence.
In the film “Tacones Lejanos” by Pedro Almodóvar, Luz Casal sang “Piensa en mí” and “Un año de amor”, setting a turning point in her career in which she encompassed many different facets and registers.
From that moment, this Galician singer achieved success in her compositions producing four albums, including “Como la flor prometida” (1995) and the single “Entre mis recuerdos”. She was awarded the Goya prize for the soundtrack of the film “El bosque animado”.
In 2007, Luz published “Vida tóxica”, the story of her fight against cancer, and in 2009 her twelfth record came out: “La Pasión”. In the latter, Luz Casal presents the public with an homage to the Latin-American bolero, in a version deep-rooted into its origins. This album is a journey into the past, where she sings original, pure boleros.
Among other awards to her work and career, Luz Casal received the Castelao Medal in 2010, the title of citizen of honor of her hometown Boimorto, and the Gold Medal of the cities of Madrid and Paris. In November of 2009 she was awarded the Medal of the Arts and Letters of France.
