Sunset at the Gaiás 2023

Consolidated as one of the unmissable musical events in the Compostelan summer, the cycle of open-air concerts of Atardecer no Gaiás (Sunset at the Gaiás) programmes this year 18 dates to extend the afternoons of July and August enjoying the best live music. This year's line-up includes popular national artists, such as the rappers Juancho Marqués and Bejo, the pop with electronic vibes of Rocío Saiz and Natalia Lacunza, or the punk rock of Biznaga. Dulzaro, Paquesvr and Júlia Colom join the list of national bands that we will be able to listen to at the Gaiás. From France, San Salvador brings its innovative proposal of punk polyphony and Ben L'Oncle Soul the rhythms of the most modern soul. The new jazz of the Portuguese trumpet player Jéssica Pina completes the international line-up of the sunsets.

In addition, in its commitment to give visibility to Galician musical talent, the cycle includes seven Galician artists. Among the Galicians there are bands that have already been playing at festivals for some time, such as Moura, a benchmark of progressive rock made in Galicia, who this year present their second album, Axexan, espreitan, and names that are beginning to stand out on stage: KYR4, Lontreira, Catuxa Salom, Mariagrep, Madalena Gamalho, as well as the young artists Faíscas and Xa'lum, winners of the Xuventude Crea contest promoted by the Xunta de Galicia.

This edition is supported by Alhambra Beer, within their commitment for the creation of unique musical experiences thought to enjoy slowly and with all senses.

SUNSET AT THE GAIÁS -  JULY 2023

Juancho Marqués 6 JULY | JUANCHO MARQUÉS

Juancho Marqués, the artist from Aranjuez, has spent more than a decade breaking the barriers and stereotypes of Spanish hip hop, daring to explore other sounds such as electronic and pop. His unmistakable style, with warm tones and sentimental themes, has established him as a reference in the urban music scene in Spain. His latest work, Paraíso 39, has just been released in May this year.

Rocío Saiz 7 JULY | ROCÍO SAIZ

An unfortunate incident deprived us of enjoying Rocío Saiz at the Gaiás, but the Madrilenian is back with all her electropop energy to make us vibrate through the emotional journey that is Amor Amargo, her debut album. A contemporary lyricism that overflows with empathy and transforms existential emptiness into a desire to dance and embrace each other. Rocío is also working on her new album, Autoboicot y Descanso, in collaboration with artists such as Tauro ("Déjate llevar") and Futurachicapop ("El hartazgo del mundo”).

Dulzaro 13 JULY | DULZARO

The fusion of avant-garde and tradition characterises Dulzaro. It feeds on the roots of the folklore of Castilla y León, its rhythms and instruments (spoons, tambourines, tambourines, anisette bottles), to renew it with the experimental sounds of electronics and synthesizers and using the poetry and imaginary of Federico García Lorca as the main axis. A different type of electronic folk which already shared stage with Tanxugueiras, Niño de Elche or Raul Refree and whom we will also have at the Gaiás.

Biznaga 14 JULY | BIZNAGA

Members of a generation of musicians that grew up around punk, Biznaga is one of the strongest candidates to cross the always difficult frontiers between this genre and the general public. To Biznaga belongs a new contemporary protest song that makes no concessions in rhetoric nor renounces in the melodic to create authentic hymns. Their latest album, Bremen No Existe (Montgri, 2022), won the MIN independent music awards for best rock album and best design.

Mariagrep 20 JULY | MARIAGREP

From Santiago to Madrid, Mariagrep crystallised Si un día, a debut work that mixed bedroom pop melancholy with urban rhythms. It was followed by Detox, a new EP in which the Compostelan takes her universe of vaporous pop to a more organic territory, as close to Indietronic music as to punk, together with the Canarian artist and producer CARREÑO. Now, Mariagrep is on tour and preparing what will be her first full-length album with different producers from the new generation of Spanish pop.

San Salvador ©Antoine Parouty 21 JULY | SAN SALVADOR

San Salvador is wild polyphony and punk embarked on a quest for universal folklore rooted in the traditions of the troubadours of the Occitan region. A radical concert with six voices, two drums, twelve hands and a tambourine that combines the energy and raw poetry of folk music with the relentless and hypnotic rhythm of percussion. Confirmed with La Grande Folie, as the great sensation of European traditional music, in 2023 they will perform for the first time in Galicia, on a long-awaited date.

Madalena Gamalho 27 JULY | MADALENA GAMALHO

One of the emerging voices of the Galician musical scene. A classically trained singer and composer with a special connection to the Lusophone world, she began in 2015 in bands such as Nota Bene and Os Meninos and is currently a member of the jazz folk band Laroá. She now presents her solo debut, Invento, with ten songs and a clear proposal to move and reflect on life and its contradictions from an eclectic and daring musical universe with influences of pop, rock, funk and world music.

Jéssica Pina 28 JULY | JÉSSICA PINA

Since she was a child, Jéssica Pina has followed the path marked by her favourite instrument: the trumpet. A path that has led her to train in jazz, to be invited by Madonna to join her world tour MADAME X and to launch herself, on her return, to present the EP Vento Novo. A work where she takes risks both in the composition and in the texts sung by herself, and with which she has conquered the stages of Portugal and now also that of the Cidade da Cultura.

SUNSET AT THE GAIÁS -  AUGUST 2023

Catuxa Salom 3 AUGUST | CATUXA SALOM

Catuxa Salom represents that generation that dreams of returning to the countryside and living in peace and quiet. The Galician artist with Argentinian roots left Madrid for a village in Lugo, where her music was born. Her songs are a hymn to rural life, eco-feminism and roots that fuse Galician folklore with Latin American tribal rhythms under an electronic wrapper. An invitation to connect with the most ancestral past through music and dance.

KYR4 4 AUGUST | KYR4

Elia Galdo, known as KYR4, is one of the great promises of Spanish rap. Motivated by her younger brother, the A Coruña native began to compose her first songs in this genre in 2021, and achieved public success with "Cantándote al oído", the song that officially launched her professional career. Since then, she has combined her studies in audio production with composition and the release of her first EP, Ojos Tristes.

Bejo 10 AUGUST | BEJO

Bejo, the mc from the Canary Islands, avoids clichés and dodges fashions with baroque rhymes, twisted alliterations and a messy aesthetic. With his vacillating flow and opting for Youtube and free downloads, Bejo has built a small tower with a solid base in which he has fans and collaborations with big names in international hip hop such as Eminem and Nas, and also with Spanish artists and producers such as BLASFEM, Macaco and Ana Mena. El Tobogán is his latest album, made in collaboration with rapper Cráneo.

Lontreira 11 AUGUST | LONTREIRA

Adriana Cores, Héctor Rodríguez and Iván Barral form Lontreira, a Galician music group with roots in the island of Arousa and with Vigo as the cradle of their formation. From winning the Canción do Verán 2022/Song of the Summer 2022 with "Corazón de Toxo" to releasing their first album, Apnea, in less than a year, Lontreira keeps taking giant steps. Synesthesic and electronic sounds that combine with poetry and all the musical influences that permeate their compositions, from folklore and metal to Latin rhythms.

Xuventude Crea 17 AUGUST | FAÍSCAS & XA'LUM [XUVENTUDE CREA]

At Atardecer no Gaiás we will also have the opportunity to discover new proposals that come from the youngest musical talent in Galicia, recognised in the Xuventude Crea programme in its Music modality. The duo Faíscas, formed by Lara Álvarez, from Redondela, and Brais Fernández from Vigo, and the project Xa'lum, by the soloist Iria Vilas from A Coruña, winners of the first and second prize of the contest, respectively, will take the stage this year at the Gaiás.

Parquesvr 18 AUGUST | PARQUESVR

Parquesvr is a rock combo from Madrid, with lyrics halfway between theatre of the absurd, nihilism and generational reflection. Made up of militant musicians from the rock circuit for almost 15 years, Parquesvr has managed to position itself in an intermediate space between the alternative scene and performance, with viral hits like "Lance Armstrong" or the after-reggaeton "Pero", and without fear of exploring territories like synth-pop, neighbourhood hip-hop or post-punk, among others.

Júlia Colom 24 AUGUST | JÚLIA COLOM

Júlia Colom discovered her love of the voice and traditional music with "El Cant de la Sibil-la", an ancestral Mallorcan song that her grandfather taught her when she was only seven years old. The influence of Mallorcan "tonadas" is inseparable from her compositional personality, as we can appreciate in Miramar, a debut album in which she combines her own creations with others of popular origin in a celebration of oral transmission and the multiple lives that songs can live.

Moura ©Leo López Foto 25 AUGUST | MOURA

MOURA is one of the most interesting rock bands on the national scene. From their participation in festivals such as Resurrection Fest, Monkey Week, Sound Isidro or Sonic Blast to their recognition at the 10th Martín Codax Music Awards, the band from A Coruña continues to explore the Galician tradition with a sound that goes through neo-psychedelic and progressive rock. Their second album, Axexan, espreitan, is a map of the immaterial Galician heritage based on personal memories, rites and the presence of the spirits of those who are no longer with us.

Ben l'Oncle Soul 30 AUGUST | BEN L'ONCLE SOUL

Thirteen years after his career took off with a bang, the French musician and composer Ben l'Oncle Soul is now free to go his own way on his own label, revealing his particular way of combining the charm of avant-garde R&B with the roots of spiritual soul. With his performance we will close the Atardecer no Gaiás concert series in August, with a very special performance in which Ben will defend the songs from Is it you?, his new album.

Natalia Lacunza 31 AUGUST | NATALIA LACUNZA

Natalia Lacunza arrives at Gaiás established as one of the stars of current Spanish pop. The Navarra native, who was impulsed by Operación Triunfo and far surpassed the expectations of the talent show, presents a sophisticated electronic pop proposal that she has been enriching over the years through collaborations with some of the most interesting names of the new Spanish independent music scene.
